Intrepid Icknield Ride Again – Matt Price

On Sunday 5 March three Icknield Road Club riders once again braved the elements to make the journey to Thrapston, Northampton to race the Mark Bell Memorial Time Trial, hosted by Kettering Cycling Club over a 20 mile course which took in the rural roads through and around the villages of Geddington, Grafton Underwood and Brigstock. On leaving Bedfordshire, the weather promised much – with blue skies and hardly a breath of wind, although the forecast was for far from ideal conditions, with a heavy band of rain to pass over the course just before the first rider was due to start. The heavy rain left a great deal of standing water on the course, and generated a great deal of spray from passing traffic making for extremely challenging conditions, which probably explained the reduced field with over 40 riders registered, and only 29 riders starting, with 28 finishers. The roughly triangular course, run in an anti-clockwise direction consisted of a six mile slightly uphill leg with a tail wind, followed by a turn in to the headwind, with some more challenging hills, followed by the final six mile leg across the prevailing wind, with lots of short sharp sprints between sharp corners on a strength sapping gradual uphill climb, with a final half mile, high speed down hill sprint to make the final short climb to the finish. A series of events are organised from April through to September, incorporating points competitions, etc. See NDCA for further details. The Millennium Trophy is a prestigious competition devised and introduced by Doug Eager of the IRC. It is made up of a number of sporting time trials incorporating competitions for men, women, vets, juniors and teams. The IRC was well represented in 2016 with Tim Davies claiming the veterans title, the IRC men claiming the men’s team prize at the IRC event, coming 3rd overall in the series men’s team event and also claiming a couple of ‘Lantern Rouge’ to boot! See Millenium Trophy for further details.
